You may hate the TPM light, but sometimes it's useful

Might keep you from driving around like this person. Not that this car had a TPM system, but you get the idea.

especially when you have a slow leak on run-flat tires.

I dislike it in the winter, otherwise I admit it’s a feature that’s really handy.

I like TPM on cars, especially if they tell you the actual tire pressure, then you can decide if you need to worry about it or not.

till the sensors’ battery go dead and you find out how many hundreds of dollars it will cost to replace 4 watch batteries.

Some of those park avenues had TPMS, and the good ones too, that tell you each corners pressure. So yeah, their dash might look like a Christmas tree, and their odometer probably looks like a slot machine with the error messages scrolling about.

True, but typically the sensors last a long time and only one goes bad at a time. $40-$60 every so often isn’t too bad.

If that person doesn’t know they’re driving on a flat tire, maybe they shouldn’t be driving. Just sayin’...

Lexus said 300 for all 4. I said I’ll look at the tire every so often and live with a blinking light.

I like it on the Fiat, because it’ll tell you the difference between “broken” and “low air.”

The light has been on for 5 years in the company car (because broken) but no one bothers to keep an eye out for low air and the system doesn’t know the difference.

At 80 dollars a corner they cost near the same as the tires theyre mounted within.

But it is a solid system offering live pressures and doesnt require coding. And the ability to turn the system off is also a plus.

Yeah but how much you gotta pay for that option? I wish my Outback told me that.

I wish my bmws did that. They just tell you if the tire is low.

Or non-run flats. My M3 had a slow leak and I would have never known from a visual. Sure enough it was at 20-something psi. I’d just fill it up everyday since I was unemployed and didn’t want to spend money. I eventually did get it fixed, had 3 nails in it. Guy patched it for free. Still got the tire on, but it’s time for new rubber.

Wow, it even identifies which tire (in this case: all of them).

On my Taco it’s like:

“Hey man, you got a low tire. Or possibly more.”

“Oh, alright, which one? Or... ones?”

“Listen, I’m just a dummy light man, I’m not a rocket surgeon.”

“Brain surgeon.”

“That too.”

It seems to be standard on most newer cars I driven in the last couple of years, say 2015 and newer. My 2013 Scoobaru Outback just has a dummy light, doesn’t tell you what tire or what pressure.

For entertainment on a Camry I rented I left the tire pressure display on and did a bunch of hard cornering, watched the pressure increase by 2-3 psi on the front tires.

My cheap 2007 Hyundai had a little diagram of of the car below the tach with an LED at each wheel that would light up for which one was low. This is apparently too difficult for Subaru in 2014.

When I swapped wheels I never reinstalled the sensors. But I am a madman. I am also against spending the money for the sensors to alert me to a thing I can determine by using my eyes and by how the car is driving.

I don’t have a car that knows the which tire, but I also know that if I had a car that knew which tire, it wouldn’t be adjusted properly...

I’d love one that told me the exact pressures.

I love how they come on when it is cold, too, then go off when the tires warm up. My wife’s car does this every year.

That seems odd, typically you don’t lose more than one or two sensors at a time. I’ve only had to replace one on my MILs 2003 caddy deville and that was a year or so ago, so a decent run on the original batteries. 15 years and 90k miles. Might be able to code it out too. My S8 winters don’t have sensors yet, so I code out the system for the winter and recode it on when I put on the summer set. But I ended up grabbing a set of sensors for the winters for next year when I ha he out the rubber. I like having the sensors working.
